Indian Motorcycle to sponsor 'RSD Super Hooligan' race at Superprestigio of the Americas

@indianmotocycle • @RolandSands • Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced it has stepped up as the title sponsor for the upcoming “RSD Super Hooligan” flat track race in Las Vegas. The street-bike based race takes place indoors on a short track at the Orleans Hotel & Casino the evening of November 21, and is presented in partnership with Roland Sands Design and AMA Pro Flat Track in conjunction with the “Superprestigio of the Americas” race.    The winner of the Super Hooligan race will receive a new 2016 Indian Scout – making the Super Hooligan race a bit more competitive than the average weekend amateur event.

Hooligan racing is traced back to the 1930s, at a time when legendary Indian Motorcycle dealer Clarence “Pappy” Hoel began organizing regional hill climb and flat track motorcycle races in and around Sturgis, SD. Hoel was a founding members of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club, and he and the Gypsies are credited with starting the now world famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 1938. Indian Motorcycle’s rich history in racing dates back to its inception with records in every racing category, including land speed, dirt track, transcontinental racing and venues like Daytona and the Isle of Man. In 1911 the Federation of American Motorcyclists published the records for 126 different categories of racing and different distances, and of those 126 racing records, Indian owned all 126.

Hooligan racing is a throwback to a post-war era where riders took virtually any available motorcycle to race in the spirit of seeking adrenaline and enjoying the comradery. Today the flat track Hooligan racing category is rapidly gaining in popularity with riders of all ages and experience levels because it brings the fun back into a less structured environment where any rider can race virtually any motorcycle. “Framers” or custom race chassis machines are not allowed in the class. It’s designed to allow racers to lightly modify an existing street chassis for racing action, a familiar situation for the world famous Indian Scout.

The company also announced it has partnered with Roland Sands Design to build and race five custom Hooligan racers based on the Indian Scout. The custom Hooligan Scouts will race in the RSD Super Hooligan event in Las Vegas, with a world-class team of riders that includes Roland Sands himself, Red Bull/KTM stunt rider Aaron Colton, plus some surprise guest riders. These new custom motorcycles will be revealed to the media on Friday, November 20 during the International Motorcycle Shows press event in Long Beach, CA.

“The Scout is a great machine upon which to base a custom bike with modern rider friendly performance. The engine and chassis are rock solid and don’t need a lot of work, so DIY customizers can focus on the aesthetic modifications,” said Roland Sands.  “It has been a blast designing and building these custom Indian Scout Hooligan bikes and after a quick test run at the local flat track I feel we have a competitive bike that will rip on the track.”

“It is an honor for Indian Motorcycle to sponsor the Super Hooligan event in partnership with Roland Sands Design and the folks at the Superprestigio of the Americas,” said Steve Menneto, President of Motorcycles at Polaris Industries. “Given the incredible racing heritage of the Indian Scout in our DNA, it’s really exciting to have five amazing Roland Sands custom Indian Scouts racing. It’s going to be a great event.”

Ducati World Première 2016 - six new models introduced

@DucatiUSA • @official_EICMA • Milan, Italy, 16 November 2015 – Streamed live all around the globe, the Ducati World Première 2016 saw the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer unveil its new bikes for the 2016 range on the eve of EICMA 2015. Buoyed by the just-achieved target of 50,000 bike sales and brimming with new products, innovative technology and plans for the future, it's a solid, confident Ducati that's heading to the event in Milan. These are true dream bikes: ready to thrill the swathes of enthusiasts soon to descend on the 73rd edition of the International Motorcycle Show to be held at the Milan-Rho trade fair from 19 to 22 November.

The press conference offered Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, a perfect opportunity to unveil the latest bikes and sum up developments on the market and at Ducati. Against the backdrop of a global market that is expanding yet still way behind pre-recession performance, Ducati not only continues to grow but has done so with a final end-of-year spurt.

"In 2015 Ducati sold over 50,000 bikes: a huge success that was achieved without growth being a goal in itself: it was, rather, the result of our customers being extremely satisfied with our products", stated Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding during the presentation press conference. "After a long period of shrinkage, the motorcycle market is now showing promising signs of recovery and this, together with the effects of continuous product innovation and geographical expansion into new markets, has allowed us to increase sales in the first ten months of 2015 by more than 20% with respect to last year. This is an outstanding result, thanks also to the success of the Ducati Scrambler, a brand that won over new fans immediately. The title of the Ducati World Première 2016 was 'More than Red: Black, Wild and Pop’. The message is clear: Ducati is strongly rooted in the sports motorcycle world and is continuing to extend its reach. And that means expansion into new segments: Black like the XDiavel, a true cruiser; Wild like the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, a bike to break down the barriers on any terrain; Pop like the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, an even lighter Ducati Scrambler with all the appeal of its smaller 400 cc engine. In total we have 7 new bikes at EICMA 2015. These, together with the Monster 1200 R, already presented at Frankfurt, and a new Ducati Scrambler version developed jointly with Italian Independent to be presented at the end of the year, bring the number of new Ducati bikes for 2016 to nine.”

The Ducati World Première 2016 showcased several new bikes: two new Ducati Scramblers, the Flat Track Pro version and the all-new Sixty2; the new Hypermotard 939, Hypermotard 939 SP and Hyperstrada 939 family; the new Panigale 959; the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak; the new Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the eagerly awaited XDiavel.

One of the most eagerly awaited bikes at EICMA 2015 was undoubtedly the XDiavel: in short, the “black” world cited in the title of the Ducati World Première 2016. This intriguing new bike sees Ducati enter the Cruiser world in its own inimitable way by presenting a true cruiser that has all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred. Called the XDiavel, it brings together two worlds: the Cruiser world - low speeds, relaxed riding and long journeys - and the Ducati world, characterised by Italian style, refined engineering and unparalleled performance. The XDiavel offers both the “low speed excitement” that comes from the relaxed riding and further-forward footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own. That's what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.
5,000, 60, 40. Three numbers that sum up the XDiavel concept. 5,000 as in the rpm at which the new twin-cylinder 156 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT 1262 engine achieves maximum torque (13.1 kgm). 60 as in the number of different ergonomic configurations for the rider. Lastly, 40, as in the maximum attainable lean angle. The XDiavel is the first Ducati to use belt-type final transmission, a must within the Cruiser world. The Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), together with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, Cruise Control and the innovative Ducati Power Launch (DPL) system, make the XDiavel a technological gem offering high performance and safety. An S version of the XDiavel is also available.

The all-new Multistrada 1200 Enduro opens up a whole new “Wild” world and represents Ducati's entry into the maxi-enduro segment. Born to explore, unstoppable on any terrain, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is a full-optional bike designed to satisfy even the most demanding globetrotter. Moreover, it's a maxi-enduro that has specifically been designed and built to handle the stress and strain of off-road riding. Thanks to spoked wheels – 19’’ at the front and 17’’ at the rear - the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is perfect for long adventure rides. Featuring electronic semi-active Sachs suspension (front and rear) and a 30-litre fuel tank, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is at home on any terrain and is unstoppable thanks to a range that can exceed 450 kilometres. On the Multistrada 1200 Enduro Cornering ABS, Cornering Lights (DCL), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) Evolution system, with 200 mm of wheel travel, all come as standard. Moreover, Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) has been introduced to aid uphill starts. Lastly, in parallel with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro itself, a broad range of dedicated accessories - the most important being an aluminium luggage set - has also been developed.

The “Pop” segment, the third of the ‘new worlds’ that Ducati has entered with its new 2016 bikes, just had to have a link to the Scrambler “Land of Joy”. The Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 doesn't just extend the range on offer from the new Ducati brand: it opens the way for a new two-wheel segment that meets the requirements of those seeking an affordable bike that's easy to handle and has low running costs, but simply can’t do without that unique Ducati Scrambler spirit: fun and shared thrills. The Sixty2 is a Ducati Scrambler that draws its inspiration from youth street culture, skateboards, street food, pop music and, above all, the pop art that, back in 1962 (the year the very first Ducati Scrambler was launched), was taking the United States by storm. That's why the Sixty2, a true "people's" Ducati Scrambler, is already a "pop icon". With the Sixty2, the highly expressive Ducati Scrambler design takes on a fresh look thanks to a slimline steel tank with dedicated graphics and logos. This makes the Sixty2 immediately recognisable, as do its three exclusive colours. Anti-conformist, affordable and essential, the Sixty2 once again provides that perfect Ducati Scrambler mix of tradition and modernity, a mix now closer than ever to the essence of motorcycling: two wheels and a simple 399 cc engine that guarantees tons of fun. Wide handlebars and a long seat ensure a comfortable, relaxed riding position. The low barycentre and a new 160/60 x 17" rear tyre with a slightly chunky surface pattern ensure great handling and pure enjoyment whatever the situation, not to mention confident braking thanks to the as-standard ABS.

Also in attendance at the Ducati World Première 2016 were some of Ducati's top riders. Both official MotoGP riders - Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone - were there to ride the new Hypermotards 939 onto the stage; the event also saw Davide Giugliano in the spotlight on the new Panigale 959 (he's now ready to return to the track on his SBK following a serious fall at Laguna Seca). Also present in Milan was Troy Bayliss, there to endorse - and sing the praises of - the Flat Track Pro version of the Ducati Scrambler.

The Ducati World Première 2016 also offered a perfect opportunity to officially inform all the fans and enthusiasts watching the live feed of the dates for the next WDW, the legendary two-yearly Ducatisti global gathering. This is now set to take place from 1 to 3 July 2016.

In addition to the bikes, Ducati also presented a host of new accessories, special parts and a new clothing collection for 2016; the latter featuring both the more 'technical' items and eye-catching apparel and accessories fully dedicated to the Ducati Scrambler world. A preview of the collection took place at the Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia in Milan, an event that saw press, public and fans make their way through the engagingly original Ducati Scrambler “Land of Joy”.

Ducati is at EICMA 2015 in Hall 15, at Stand M04 and M30.

Honda Introduces Updated CB500F Plus More Returning Models For 2016‏

@HondaPowersprts • MARKHAM, ON (Nov. 16, 2015) – At a special media event held in Milan this evening ahead of the EICMA motorcycle show, Honda unveiled the updated CB500F naked sport bike, which gets an aggressive new look and a number of important technical improvements for 2016. At the same time, Honda announced the refreshed CBR650F and updated Giorno, as well as a number of returning 2016 models.

“We’re pleased that the improved CB500F headlines our latest new-product announcement for the 2016 model year,” said James Marchand, Assistant Vice President, Motorcycle Division. “The CB brand has a proud history with Honda, and with sharp ne w styling, this fun, capable naked bike continues to be worthy of the name. The CBR650F and Giorno have been revised as well, and the announcement also includes several exciting returning models. We look forward to sharing them with our c ustomers during the 2016 motorcycle consumer show tour.”

CB500F (ABS)

Featuring sculpted new bodywork for an aggressive look that highlights the motorcycle’s functional components, the 2016 CB500F with its standard ABS brakes is now an even better choice for a midsize naked sport bike. LED lights are now standard front and rear, and the shortened muffler has an improved exhaust note. The fuel tank is now larger and has a hinged cap, while the fork gets externally adjustable spring preload. Rounding out the improvements to the 2016 Honda CB500F are an adjustable front brake lever, aluminum die-cast passenger foot pegs, transmission updates that result in improved shifting feel, and a “wave”-style ignition key.

Colour: Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic; Candy Orange

CBR650F (ABS)

Since its 2014 introduction, Honda’s CBR650F has steadily built a reputation as a midsized sport bike that does it all, and for 2016, it gets an updated look, with an all-new radical colour treatment. With sharp handling and a 649cc inline-four-cylinder engine that has a broad spread of power and standard ABS brakes, the CBR650F has been well received as a step up to high-performance sport riding or a first step into sport touring.

                Colour: Matte Black Metallic/Candy Red

GIORNO

Honda’s faithful, friendly little scooter gets a styling refreshment for 2016, with all-new bodywork. The Giorno features a V-matic® automatic transmission and is ideal for zipping around town or campus, especially with its easy to operate features and low operating costs. Practical details include a convenient hook for holding shopping bags, an inner storage bin that can hold a 1-litre bottle of water and a 22-litre under-seat lockable storage that’s large enough to hold a bag of groceries or a full face helmet. The fuel-efficient 49cc four-stroke engine offers big fun in a small affordable package.

                Colour: Pearl Blue; Black Metallic

THE FOLLOWING MODELS RETURN FOR 2016

FORZA (ABS)

It’s hard to imagine a more user-friendly vehicle than Honda’s Forza™ scooter, which boasts a host of rider conveniences, including a simple automatic Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT), a handy power outlet for accessories, and enough integral storage to hold a pair of helmets. The liquid-cooled, 279cc engine sips fuel, but it also has plenty of power for riding two-up and for highway cruising.

Colour: Pure Red; Seal Silver Metallic

RUCKUS

Rarely does a model inspire its own culture the way that the tough-but-approachable Ruckus has built a dedicated following, with owners personalizing their scooters and getting together for rides and social gatherings. A thrifty, liquid-cooled 49cc engine gets the job done on the road, but it’s the Ruckus’s look—highlighted by chunky tires, a tubular frame and minimalist bodywork—that attracts such a diverse array of customers.

                Colour: Black; White/Red

CTX700T (ABS)

Honda’s CTX700T continues to offer a distinctive look with its low 719-mm seat height and forward-set foot pegs put the rider in a position that’s comfortable for all-day touring. The 670cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine provides excellent torque and plenty of power for spirited riding on twisty roads. Practical features like integrated storage and ABS brakes make it both convenient and confidence inspiring. A fixed fairing and windscreen help protect the rider from the elements and a range of Honda Genuine Accessories have been developed to extend the CTX700T’s touring capability.

                Colour: Gray Blue Metallic

CRF250L

The CRF250L has established itself as Canada’s favourite dual sport model, outselling the competition by a wide margin. The CRF250L returns for 2016 with its balance of practicality and adaptable fun. Electric start, light weight and affordability make this machine great for first-timers, but many longtime enthusiasts also choose it for long-distance, or even worldwide adventures where reliability is paramount. The nimble CRF250L offers excellent fuel economy thanks to its fuel-injected, counterbalanced, double-overhead cam, liquid-cooled four-stroke engine, and with its wide-ratio, six-speed transmission, the model is equally at home on the trail and daily city commutes.

BMW Motorrad presents the new 2016 BMW F700GS and F800GS

Photo caption: The BMW F800GS (pictured) and F700GS have been updated for 2016.

@BMWMotorrad • Munich (November 17, 2015)-  The popular BMW Motorrad models F700GS and F800GS have displayed versatile capabilities for years: carefree riding fun due to secure controllability on all surfaces, vigorous drive power and excellent suitability for both day-to-day riding and travel - even when the route consists of nothing but gravel tracks. It is a concept in two variants that has been received with great enthusiasm by many motorcycle fans over the years and has now been visually refined by BMW Motorrad for model year 2016.

With the newly designed tank cover and a likewise newly configured ignition lock cover, both models have an even more fresh and dynamic look. What is more, the elegant metallic appearance of elaborately electroplated elements is applied to the knee covers (F700GS) and radiator cover (F800GS) along with a partially engraved and newly configured model inscription, conveying enhanced high-end quality and a fascinating contrast with the painted surfaces.

Newly designed two-colour seats round off the fresh, dynamic appearance of the two models. In order to ensure that optimum riding fun on the F700GS and

F800GS is available to all riders, five possible seat heights are available for each model with four seats and the optional lowered suspension (ex works option). This makes for a wide seat height range of 765 mm - 860 mm (F700GS) and 820 mm - 920 mm (F800GS).

An overview of highlights in the new F700GS and F800GS:

In both models, powerful forward thrust is ensured by the well-established, powerfully distinctive, liquid-cooled 4-valve 2-cylinder engine with a capacity of 798 cc, fuel injection and 6-speed gearbox. It provides an impressively spontaneous response, remarkable pulling power and a low level of fuel consumption.

In the F700GS it has an output of 55 kW (75 hp) at 7 300 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 77 Nm at 5 300 rpm. In the F800GS, an output of 63 kW (85 hp) is available at 7 500 rpm and a torque of 83 Nm at 5 750 rpm.

In line with the "Safety 360°" principle, the new F700GS and F800GS are fitted as standard with a high-performance BMW Motorrad ABS system. Other safety-related features are the optional Automatic Stability Control ASC and the Electronic Suspension Adjustment ESA.

As before, the new F800GS combines suitability for road use and touring with profound off-road capabilities while the new F700GS is geared more towards motorcyclists who not require the same degree of off-road potential.

We will continue to design and build the best motorcycles in every class we compete.”

Indian Motorcycles Kicks off 'Project Scout: Build a Legend' Program

@indianmotorcycle •MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (November 30, 2015) — Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced its ‘Project Scout: Build a Legend’ custom program.

The program gives select dealers a high-profile forum to showcase their passion for Indian Motorcycle and their team’s talent by building a custom Indian® Scout®. There are no rules or restrictions on bike theme, cost or build style, although entrants must utilize a 2016 Indian Scout model and a minimum of three genuine Indian Scout accessories from the current catalog of more than 200 items. The Indian Scout custom build program was open to Indian Motorcycle dealers from around the world on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Indian Scout has long been a favorite platform for custom builders, and the 2016 Scout continues that heritage with class-leading power and handling upon which customizers can build their ultimate vision,” said Indian Motorcycle Marketing Director Scott Meek. “Through this program we are giving our dealers around the world a global stage from which to demonstrate their creativity, and ultimately to write a new chapter in the legendary history of the Indian Scout.”

From now through January 15, 2016 each participating dealer will submit monthly photos reflecting their progress toward completion, which Indian Motorcycle will regularly highlight on its social media channels. Beginning on January 18, final custom build photos will begin being published and shared on the Indian Motorcycle website and social media channels and Indian Motorcycle fans will be allowed to vote for their favorites. This fan voting will continue through February 19, and on February 20 the top three finalists will be announced.

Honda Canada announces VFR1200X‏

@HondaPowersprts •(December 7, 2015)- Honda is very pleased to announce that the VFR1200X will be joining the now complete, 2016 lineup of adventure and adventure-touring motorcycles.

Launched in Europe in 2012, the VFR1200X design team, led by Large Project Leader Yosuke Hasegawa, set out to create a machine that gave the rider a sense of challenge and the facility to explore. As a go-anywhere, do-anything tool it has few peers - but its real difference lies in the addictive power and sound produced by its soulful V4 engine, something unique in this class.

Now the pinnacle of Honda's 'X' family, the VFR1200X arrives in Canada hosting a myriad of adventure-touring on board fixtures such as an easily-adjustable windscreen and three levels of S Mode in the optional Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) version. Equipped with a 1,237cc V4 engine, advanced chassis and electronic package - Combined ABS, Traction Control System (TCS) and the option of a DCT gearbox - the VFR1200X has already firmly planted a flag at the high-performance end of the adventure-touring segment in the European market.

"With the growing popularity of the Adventure market, we are thrilled to add this model to our X line-up, we now feel confident we are able to satisfy the needs of most adventure riders out there," said James Marchand, Assistant Vice President, Motorcycle Division. "Honda has always prided itself on being a company that offers something for everyone-whether a new rider or a highly experienced rider, the 2016 Honda line-up meets the needs of today's motorcyclist."

The VFR1200X has received a multitude of updates since first being introduced, including Honda's Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) which can be turned off), allowing the rider to select three different levels to control engine torque and resultant drive to the rear wheel. The powerful, smooth VFR1200X is all-new to the Canadian market and is available with a standard gearbox or Honda's revolutionary six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT); both versions feature HSTC and combined ABS brakes and shaft drive. The 19- and 17-inch wheels offer capable road-going performance, while the inverted 43mm fork and single-sided swingarm incorporate modern suspension technologies.

Other features include a one-hand-adjustable windscreen, hand guards and that all important accessory socket to charge smart phones or power heated vests.

The VFR1200X offers a comfortable ride and is very well suited to spending long days in the saddle either riding solo or two-up. If you are looking for an all new adventure-tourer that offers great looks, comfort and reliability the VFR1200X has all that and more.

Ducati Scrambler and Italia Independent Announce Limited-Edition Scrambler & Accessories

@DucatiScrambler •#scramblerducati • Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), 7 December 2015 – Ducati Scrambler and Italia Independent present their new creations in Miami.

During the week of the prestigious contemporary art exhibition “Art Basel” at the Setai Hotel, the two brands launched a new limited edition Ducati Scrambler and a collection of dedicated sunglasses inspired by the “Land of Joy,” the theme that characterizes the iconic motorbike made in Bologna.

This is a global partnership based on a three-year collaboration agreement and unites Ducati and Italia Independent for the first time, creating an incredible mix of Made in Italy style and creativity. The focus of the collaboration is Ducati Scrambler, the brand created by Ducati to interpret the values of the iconic 1970s motorbike, introduced in the United States and shortly after achieving international acclaim. A special logo, representing the union of the two different souls from which the project originated, has been designed to characterize the products that will be developed together.

While the new Ducati Scrambler Italia Independent is an original, unique interpretation of this motorbike, aimed at a sophisticated clientele interested in new trends, it still maintains the fundamental elements that distinguish the brand. Created in limited edition with only 1,077 units, the bike is enhanced by an aluminium plate with laser etching of each unit's serial number. The Ducati Scrambler - Italia Independent logo is present on both sides of the tank as well as on the label on the exclusive leather seat.

The Ducati Scrambler Italia Independent is inspired by the world of the “café racer” and stands out thanks to a series of hand-crafted details developed together by the creative teams of the two companies: a black engine with brushed cylinder head fins and visible machining, black full exhaust unit with Termignoni silencer, low handlebar with variable section and aluminium rear mirrors mounted on the ends. The short front mudguard, the essential nose fairing, the frame and the wheels painted “Night Copper” (colour designed for this special edition), the seat with stitching in the same colour with the embroidered Italia Independent logo on the back further embellish this version. The “Matte Black” colour of the entire bike and the side panels of the tank, created by an artisan brushing process reminiscent of the "Night Copper” of the wheels and chassis, emphasise even further the “café racer” soul of this new bike.

The Ducati Scrambler sunglasses created by Italia Independent and dedicated to the new bike from which they were inspired are both elegant and sporty. A classic, timeless shape, dark black with rubber surface treatment, mirrored copper-coloured lenses like the internal part of the frame. The internal surface of both the bridge and the temples also share the colour of the bike frame and some details of the Ducati Scrambler Italia Independent: copper with a “brushed” effect. The final element of this custom product is the dedicated logo inside the left temple preceded by the words “Unique Edition for” while the Italia Independent logo is present on the right temple.

Great care and attention to detail, both inherent characteristics of Ducati and Italia Independent, allow this eyewear to embody perfectly the lifestyle spirit of Ducati Scrambler. The complete range of sunglasses inspired by the iconic bike includes four other models based upon the different versions of the Ducati Scrambler, reproducing their aesthetics and colour schemes. The new bike and eyewear collection are just the first concrete result of this creative collaboration between the two brands.

“In these days in Miami we have been celebrating art and design, the ideal setting to present the first limited edition of the new Ducati Scrambler and a brand new eyewear collection, the first tangible result of our partnership with Italia Independent,” commented Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding. “Lapo Elkann and his team of creative designers have brought a breath of fresh air and creativity to Ducati, and we are sure that this will be the start of an exciting partnership.”

Andrea Tessitore, Co-Founder and CEO of Italia Independent commented: “I am delighted with the result of our collaboration with a brand - Ducati - that embodies the excellence of Made in Italy and is the leader in its sector. This partnership represents another important step in our process of international development and growth in terms of brand awareness and allows us to enter a world of creativity, research and development that we have attempted to bring to the eyewear made for this collaboration.”

“Art Basel has a certain charm which makes the launch of this all-Italian partnership even more special. Style and technology, heritage and innovation, but more than anything else cohesion and synergy between the two teams, consisting of men and women working together, are the true strength of our two companies and the key to success for this collaboration,” commented Lapo Elkann, Co-Founder and Chairman of Italia Independent

First Canadian appearance! Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L!

The Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L made its first Canadian appearance in Toronto last week.

The Canadian motorcycle media was brought to downtown Toronto on December 16 for a first glimpse at the 2016 Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L, one of the most anticipated new motorcycles of the coming season.

While neither of the two models presented were in running condition, the walkaround and accompanying technical presentation allowed Canada's trusted moto journalists to become better acquainted with the new model and the finer details of Honda's big new dual sport/adventure machine.

The Africa Twin name has a legacy going back almost 30 years in Honda's heritage, having debuted in 1987 as a Dakar-inspired two-cylinder motorcycle in the off-road/dual sport/adventure/rally realm. Honda Product Planning Manager Nick Smirniw, who led the presentation, indicated that the original Africa Twin was one of the first adventure bikes in history, a segment that is now one of the most populated - and popular - on the current motorcycle landscape.

The design concept for this rebirthed Africa Twin, which was originally shown as the"True Adventure" concept at the EICMA last fall, was "Go Anywhere." What this mean is that, while Honda presents this CRF1000L as a truly off-road motorcycle in press photos, the company understands that the percentage of riders that actually ride on serious off-road terrain is fairly small; most customers are endeared to the possibility of getting off the beaten path, but will more than likely stick to pavement and the occasional gravel or fire road.

That being said the Africa Twin has plenty of true off-road characteristics like ample ground clearance, tall wheels (21 inches in front, 18 in the back), a tall seat (adjustable between 830-850 mm), and plenty of suspension travel. So, it's definitely positioned toward the real adventurer who shuns the pavement in favour of the unknown.

A 1,000 cc engine may sound a bit big for a true off-road bike, though Smirniw admitted that Honda wasn't targeting riders of the BMW R1200GS, which is the most popular of the high-displacement dual sport bikes and one that has serious off-road capabilities. For the asphalt there are highway perks like a tall windscreen with slits and passages to relieve buffeting, ABS and traction control (definitely road-going attributes). On the flip side, a steel frame is tougher than aluminum in the case of a hard drop (not uncommon in tricky, rocky terrain), and both the ABS and traction control have settings designed for off-road. There's adaptive rear ABS Cancelling (for better braking on loose dirt surfaces) and a 'G switch' for spinning up the rear tire on gravel to steer, a common practice on dirt.

And then there's the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) factor...

DCT uses two clutches, one for even-numbered gears and one for odd-numbered, and shifts like an automatic transmission intuitively without rider input and without the use of a clutch lever or foot shifter (although the rider can choose to shift manually via 'triggers' on the clutch side of the handlebar, F1 racecar-style). Honda has never released an off-road or dual sport bike with DCT; it's strictly been for road use. That fact raised some eyebrows when it was brought up in our presentation, but again, Honda had something up its sleeve. The engineering team improved the DCT in the lab for off-road use; this includes 'incline detection' that allows the bike to get up and down slopes effortlessly, and 'cornering detection,' which means the transmission won't shift while you're sliding through a corner in the dirt, which could potentially unsettle the bike.

It will be interesting to see what this all feels like in practice, but in theory it sounds like Honda's latest DCT is something we haven't seen on a production motorcycle to this point.

Photo Dec 16 11 39 23 PM

More highlights: Suspension is fully adjustable both in front and back; the 18.8 L tank should get about 400 km of range; a Unicam valve train (meaning SOHC) is employed; the manual (non-DCT) version comes with a slipper clutch; and there are four different DCT drive modes depending on your preference.

Drum roll for the price... The manual (non-DCT) version of the 2016 Africa Twin CRF1000L comes in at $13,999 (add $300 for rally graphics), while DCT costs just $1,000 more - $14,999. At that price it's sure to sell, and given the effort that Honda has put into this much-hyped model, it's hard to imagine anyone going away disappointed with their purchase. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the AT isn't another smash hit from the innovative and quality-driven minds at the Honda corporation.

BMW presents new concepts: Laser headlights, heads-up helmet display, at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

@BMWMotorradCA | @CES | BMW Motorrad will be displaying two innovations at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 6-9 January 2016. Laser light for motorcycles and a helmet with a head-up display will be presented, setting new standards of motorcycle safety, along with a technical outlook of how they may be employed in series models of the future.

BMW K1600GTL concept vehicle with BMW Motorrad laser light.
See and be seen has always been one of the central axioms of safe motorcycling, for which reason BMW Motorrad has long since dedicated itself to the continued development and optimisation of motorcycle lighting units. Over the years, this has seen the introduction of adaptive headlights for riding in curves, LED daytime running light and dynamic brake light in BMW motorcycles. And like so often, the development was able to benefit from synergy effects with BMW automobiles.

In the case of the K1600GTL concept vehicle presented here, the BMW Motorrad laser light is derived from a design from the automobile division of the BMW Group. The innovative laser technology is already available in the new BMW 7 Series as well as in the BMW i8. BMW Motorrad has now adapted this technology – which is as established as it is forward-looking – for motorcycling applications. Not only do laser light headlamps generate a particularly bright and pure-white light, but they even achieve a high-beam range of up to 600 metres, which is double that of conventional headlights. The safety of night-time riding has now increased significantly as a result, due not only to the increased range but also to the precise illumination of the road. Moreover, the laser technology has a very long service life, thanks to its compact, robust and maintenance-free construction.

bwm

BMW Motorrad laser light has been incorporated in the K1600GTL concept vehicle as a feasibility test. BMW Motorrad is testing the use of this headlamp technology in series vehicles in the course of its preliminary development.

At the moment, the technology is still too cost-intensive for use in motorcycles. However, it is expected that the economies of scale resulting from their large-scale use in the automobile industry will result in a price structure with a clear downward trend. Its use in motorcycles could might then be imaginable in the medium term.

Head-up display helmet: road information always in your sights.
In road traffic, it only takes a fraction of a second or a brief distraction to put the rider in a dangerous situation. In 2003, BMW became the first European automobile manufacturer to introduce a head-up display as optional equipment for BMW automobiles.

The BMW head-up display projects necessary or desirable traffic or vehicle information directly into the rider's field of view, allowing him to maintain constant observation of the traffic on the road, with no distraction. This would appear even more important with motorcycles than it is with cars, because it can sometimes only take a brief visual distraction to put the rider in a critical road situation.

P90206800 highResMedium

With a view to offering this technology in motorcycles of the future, a pre-development process was conducted in which a BMW Motorrad helmet was fitted with an innovative head-up display function. This enables the projection of data directly into the rider's field of view. This means that the rider no longer has to glance at the instrument panel and he is able to concentrate fully and without distraction on the road traffic.

All displays are freely programmable; ideally, to provide the best-possible support for rider safety, only information that is helpful and relevant to the current situation should be displayed to the rider at any given moment.

Safety and comfort information for an even more emotionally charged riding experience.

The display options comprise safety-relevant information, for instance data relating to the technical status of the motorcycle, such as tyre pressure, oil level and fuel level, travel speed and selected gear, speed limit and road sign recognition, plus warnings of impending dangers.

P90206802 highResMedium

By means of the future V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) communication, it might also be possible to display information in real time, for example to give due warning of any suddenly impending hazards.

Moreover, the head-up display also allows the visualisation of content designed to increase rider comfort. An example would be the planned route along with navigation advice prior to commencing a journey.

The helmet with head-up display also offers interesting possibilities for making the highly emotional experience of motorcycle riding even more intensive and at the same time safer. For instance, an action camera pointing forwards, located inside the helmet, can record video footage of the journey directly from the helmet. A second camera oriented towards the rear could at some point in the future perform the function of a 'digital rear-view mirror'. And last but not least, this technology also enables the visualisation of other riders in a motorcycle group. This enables the rider to see where his companions are at any given moment.

P90206810 highResMedium

The helmet, which is also fitted with an integrated mini-computer and loudspeakers, is controlled from the left-hand handlebar fittings using the BMW Motorrad multicontroller. As well as operating the camera, this allows the rider to comfortably select the information he requires.

The necessary information display technology can be integrated in existing helmets, without affecting either wearer comfort or rider safety. The operating time of the system with the two replaceable batteries is around five hours.

BMW Motorrad wants to develop this innovative technology to series-production level within the next few years, thus adding a further safety feature to its already wide range of rider equipment.

Ducati unveils wild new DraXter Diavel!!

Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), 22 January 2016 – At the Motor Bike Expo of Verona (22-24 January) Ducati is exhibiting a further addition to its XDiavel cruiser world, the all-new draXter. This “concept bike” interprets the XDiavel world from a Drag-racing viewpoint. The project was developed by the Ducati Design Center's Advanced Design area, a section dedicated to exploring the future style and design concepts of Ducati motorcycles.

Their ideas and sketches have allowed the Ducati prototype department to come up with the draXter, starting from a standard production XDiavel. The beating heart of the draXter is that of an extreme dragster with premium racing componentry. The suspension and brakes are taken directly from the Panigale Superbike. This styling exercise has accentuated the lines and proportions of the XDiavel making them more extreme than ever and turning the draXter into a unique, breath-taking "racer".

The number 90 on the side of the Ducati draXter recalls the racing world, yet also pays homage to Ducati's 90th anniversary, being celebrated this year.

The draXter, like all the new XDiavel cruiser bikes, will be at the Motor Bike Expo, on the Ducati stand (Hall 4 Stand 23 C), until Sunday 24 January. In addition to the unprecedented concept bike and XDiavel and XDiavel S factory bikes, visitors will also be able to take a look at the brand's new Cruiser range of accessories and apparel.

Ducati North America Breaks Previous Sales Record

@DucatiUSA •Cupertino, Calif. (February 1, 2016) – In 2015, Ducati North America increased unit sales by +14.1%, based on 12,132 total motorcycles sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This is the sixth year the company has shown impressive overall sales growth in its largest worldwide sales region.

All three countries reached historical sales levels, with the United States at 9,674 units sold (up +10%) and northern neighbor Canada at 1,458 bikes (up +12%). Mexico, thanks to the addition of new exclusive Ducati dealers, experienced significant increases, with 1,003 motorcycles sold – a growth rate of more than 85%.

In 2015, the top models sold by the Bologna-based manufacturer in North America have been the hugely popular new Scrambler line of urban naked bikes, the lightweight, 148 horsepower 899 Panigale sport bike and the Monster 821. Notably, these three models have shown special appeal to the wave of new and younger riders entering the world of motorcycles. In the U.S., Ducati’s largest single worldwide market, power reigns. The radical 1299 Panigale and sport-touring Multistrada 1200, while 2015 sales standouts, also received strong critical acclaim for technological advancements in motorcycle design and riding features.

“Our success in North America is the result of the hard work of the entire Ducati organization and our network of dedicated dealers,” Dominique Cheraki, outgoing CEO of Ducati North America. “I am proud of what we have collectively achieved during the past five years of my tenure and I’m enthusiastic of what the future holds for the brand.”

Future growth is strongly anticipated in 2016 since more than 45% of Ducati’s model line-up will be all-new offerings. Two new motorcycles in particular, the XDiavel and the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, offer the potential to tap rider segments that were left untouched by any Ducati product in the past.

The XDiavel, the undisputed star of the EICMA show in Milan, blends design, technology and unparalleled performance to deliver a relaxed riding experience that merges the foot-forward riding position of a typical cruiser with the adrenalin rush of a true sport machine. Riders will have the opportunity to find out for themselves during Ducati’s “XDiavel Experience Tour,” which will visit more than 15 cruiser hot spots, starting with Phoenix on February 20, through Daytona Bike Week and beyond. Ducati dealers will have XDiavel models available for sale in their showrooms early this Spring.

The “Wild Side” of Ducati comes in the form of the highly anticipated Multistrada 1200 Enduro, arriving at Ducati dealers in April. Building on years of experience elevating the technological superiority of the Multistrada, engineers in Bologna have crafted the Enduro model with 19-inch front wheel and 7.9 gallon gas tank for long distances. The motorcycle is also available with various off-road accessories as well as knobby tires and other features designed for the avid dual-sport rider.

Jason Chinnock now leads as newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, coming from Automobili Lamborghini America where he was in charge of marketing operations. Chinnock is no stranger to Ducati, having worked for the company in sales, marketing and dealer operations roles since 2000.

“It’s a tremendous honor and responsibility to lead Ducati North America into the next chapter,” said Chinnock. “We have a clear objective to continue the growth of our brand in a manner that delivers a premium experience to our owners and profitable business for our dealer partners. I am confident that we have a strong internal management team. This, coupled with an outstanding dealer network and a tremendous product offering, will give us the ability to fully capitalize on the opportunity in this market.”

PUREBREED CYCLES & BMW Canada Unveil Brooklyn Project

@BMWMotorrad • @VanMotoShow •Montreal, QC (February 5, 2016) – In partnership with BMW Motorad Canada, PUREBREED CYCLES officially unveils The Brooklyn Project this weekend at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show in Abbotsford, BC.

This inaugural collaboration limited to 40 custom café racers worldwide is based on BMW’s venerable S1000R roadster. While each unit will share the same mechanical underpinnings, every one will be uniquely crafted to the specific individual taste and requirements of their owner, making each model truly one of a kind.

The Brooklyn Project blends the technological sophistication of the 2016 BMW S1000R with unique retro-inspired café racer styling. Painstaking attention to detail was paid and no component was overlooked. Every new part was digitally rendered then crafted using 3D printing technology prior to development to ensure the proper fit and finish was achieved. Adding to the bike’s individuality and versatility, various pieces can quickly and easily be removed for track day duty and clipped back on for the ride home.

“We believe that The Brooklyn Project offers riders the best of both worlds,” says PUREBREED President and main builder Guillaume Brochu, “Owners benefit from the advanced performance technology and reliable modern engineering of the S1000R which is far and away the best motorcycle on the road, but we also saw its potential as the basis of the ultimate cafe racer by incorporating classic café racer styling elements.”

The brainchild of Quebec-based custom bike builder Guillaume Brochu, PUREBREED CYCLES immediately started making a name for itself by breathing new life into old motorcycles. Crafting as many a 40 custom café racers since opening in 2012, Brochu has more recently set its sights on this new vision of creating the ideal performance motorcycle for the modern urban gentleman – one that exudes their individuality in comfort and style.

Modern Technology Meets Classic Style

All of the stock bike technology was retained, including ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), which can be disengaged, ASC (Automatic Stability Control), electronic suspension system, and selectable riding modes. Proprietary PUREBREED engine mapping and an optimized fuel injection unit helps increase the already lofty performance capabilities of the bespoke roadster, as did the addition of an aluminum racing radiator and oil cooler along with a full Arrow Competition titanium exhaust system. These various modifications result in an additional 15hp gain over the stock 160hp of the S1000R in a package that tips the scales at a sprightly 173 kgs. Thanks to swapping the fuel tank, fenders, wheels, seat frame and cowl for lighter Carbon fibre.

A great deal of time and attention was dedicated to comfort and ergonomics for both the street and track. This includes the incorporation of folding brake and clutch levers, adjustable rear sets, the custom designed top tree, clip-on handlebars, and a custom tri-density foam seat upholstered in fine, treated leather.

While many of the customizations were based on improving comfort and performance, there were also many stylistic changes made in order to bring Brochu’s vision to life, including custom engraving, LED taillight and indicators in the handlebars, bar end mirrors, custom CNC gas cap and brake fluid reservoir, an Aluminum sprocket cover, custom LED headlight, dash and tachometer, not to mention the custom graphics and tri-coat paint by Simon Galarneau.

Orders are now being taken with delivery expected for April 2016.

About PUREBREED CYCLES:

Victory Motorcycles Octane Rips Onto The Scene‏

@VictoryBikes • (February 22, 2016)Every high-octane horsepower enthusiast is familiar with the muscle car formula: take a big motor, insert it into a lightweight chassis, then delete any creature comforts or other unnecessary accessories. What’s left is just what you need to go very fast, and nothing else.

The all-new 2017 Victory Octane is the two-wheeled expression of that concept, with a modern twist. This is raw adrenaline that rules the streets. A 1200cc, liquid-cooled V-twin—Victory’s first-ever liquid-cooled engine—utilizes dual overhead cams and four-valve heads to rev beyond 8000 rpm and put down an authoritative 104 horsepower. That’s more horsepower than any Victory motorcycle ever built. And weighing just 528 pounds, it’s the lightest Victory motorcycle ever built, too. No surprise, then, that Octane is also the quickest Victory down the quarter-mile, and the fastest from 0-60 mph, too. And with a price starting at just $10,499, Octane runs in a class of its own.

A stiff and light cast-aluminum frame transmits every last one of those horsepower directly to the pavement. Sharp steering geometry, a tight, 62.1-inch wheelbase and 32-degrees of available lean angle deliver agility previously unknown to American V-twin motorcycles. Muscular styling cuts an undeniably modern profile and a sportbike-inspired bullet cowl improves airflow over the rider at the triple-digit speeds Octane is built to achieve.

A RACE-BRED POWERTRAIN

Developed from the Project 156 prototype that was tested at the most demanding racing event in the world—the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb™—the 60-degree V-twin features short-stroke engine geometry just like the Project 156 racer to allow higher engine rpm and more horsepower, and a quick-revving engine response more like a sportbike than any traditional American V-Twin. An electronically metered 60mm throttle body feeds high-flow, 4-valve heads operated by dual overhead cams, and liquid cooling quenches the heat that is the byproduct of generating 104 horsepower and 76 foot-pounds of tire-shredding torque. Geared short for quicker acceleration, Octane can sprint down the quarter-mile in 12 seconds and rush from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds. With the heart of a racer, Octane has power to burn.

A STIFF AND SOLID CHASSIS

Raw power is only half the musclebike equation. You also need a solid chassis that can transmit all that power to the pavement and also hold a tight line when bent into a corner. Octane’s solid-mounted powertrain is a stressed member that connects cast-aluminum front and rear frame sections, with twin tubular-steel backbones for added reinforcement. This rigid assembly is suspended up front by a 41mm fork equipped with dual-rate springs for solid front-end feedback over any type of pavement, and out back with stylish laydown shocks mounted 53 degrees off-horizontal, also equipped with preload-adjustable dual-rate springs. Oversized, 298mm disc brakes with stainless-steel lines at both ends wait at-the-ready for those rare occasions when you want to shed speed, instead. Cast aluminum, 10-spoke wheels are sized and shod for sure-footed handling. The 18-inch front wheel wears 130/70-18 rubber, while the 17-inch rear wheel is wrapped with a 160/70-17 tire. A low-slung solo saddle that rides just 25.9-inches above the pavement, an equally low pullback handlebar and semi-forward-set foot controls create a riding position that looks properly badass but still provides adequate support when the rider grabs a big handful of throttle and the bike wants to rocket off the line.

SHARP-EDGED STYLING

There are no smooth, flowing lines here. Octane is the most aggressive Victory motorcycle ever built, and the styling has been revised to suit with harder lines, sharper creases, a more-pronounced center spine and other details that make Octane look leaner and meaner than any American motorcycle ever before. The bullet cowl is standard equipment and screams to oncoming traffic that this bike is built for speed—the only thing other riders are going to see is the LED taillight disappearing into the distance. Chrome won’t get you home, so there’s hardly any shiny stuff on Octane. The bulk of the chassis, running gear and powertrain are blacked-out, and Matte Super Steel Gray bodywork looks all business. Even the tank badge has been cast in gray instead of the traditional Victory red to create a modern, monochrome look.

THE MODERN AMERICAN MUSCLEBIKE

Based off a proven Polaris® platform, Octane uses a significant number of unique parts specifically designed and engineered to deliver the high-performance, raw-adrenaline riding experience Victory riders demand. With a high-revving engine character and surprising high-rpm power hit, it behaves more like a sportbike than any American V-twin that has come before. With unexpectedly low weight and lots of available lean angle, a well-ridden Octane will embarrass many replica-racers down a twisty stretch of pavement. And with pricing starting at just $10,499, it’s less expensive than most supersports—and tougher looking, too. Fast, capable, stylish and affordable, Victory’s Octane is the formula for the Modern American Musclebike.

Indian Motorcycle announces new 2016 Springfield touring bike

MINNEAPOLIS (March 3, 2016) — Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced the new 2016 Indian Springfield. Named after the birthplace of Indian Motorcycle and designed for a pure riding experience, the Indian Springfield is a soulful and versatile new addition to the 2016 lineup.

It features true, authentic American craftsmanship, superior refinement and only the most essential touring features for the ultimate in open road touring without distractions.

Inspired by the rich heritage of Indian Motorcycle, the Indian Springfield offers classic styling blended with thoroughly modern technology for a purist’s take on both touring comfort and urban versatility.

The Indian Springfield can be quickly converted into a cruiser with the quick-release windshield and saddlebags removed, or transformed into a high-capacity touring model with Genuine Indian Motorcycle accessories. While maintaining the style and luxury for which Indian Motorcycle is renowned, the Indian Springfield makes its own distinctive mark in the bagger and touring category. While related to the iconic Indian® Chief® family, the multifaceted Indian Springfield hard bagger was developed with a unique new trunk-compatible chassis for higher loading capacity and a premium touring experience without sacrificing handling prowess.

Designed for an unobstructed view of the road ahead, the Indian Springfield sports a bespoke quick-release windshield that creates a large air pocket for rider and passenger comfort. Other comfort features such as remote locking hard bags and adjustable passenger floorboards come standard along with real leather seating, high-resolution Anti-Lock Brakes, tire pressure monitoring, electronic cruise control, and a powerful headlight and dual driving lights. Standard front and rear highway bars allow mounting of accessories and offer valuable protection from tip-overs. Brightly chromed forks, headlight housing, fender trim, engine covers, exhaust and handlebars with internal wiring bring the shine along for the ride.

“The new Indian Springfield wasn’t designed to fill a space in our lineup; it was built to fill a space in the hearts of riders who value the rich heritage and fine craftsmanship of Indian Motorcycle, and who want both a pure touring bike and a sleek urban cruiser,” said Steve Menneto, President of Motorcycles for Polaris Industries. “The Springfield’s unmatched versatility will win the hearts of motorcycling purists around the world.”

Powered by the highly regarded Thunder Stroke® 111 engine, the Indian Springfield delivers 119 ft-lb of torque (North American models) to conquer any highway in any weather. Its unique new chassis was designed to handle a wide load range, featuring cartridge forks and an air adjustable rear shock with 4.5 inches of travel for safely transporting up to 242 kg (533 lb) in style. Touring comfort can be further enhanced with a full line of accessories including a tall and low windshield, heated driver and passenger seats, soft lowers, a 17-gallon accessory trunk and heated grips to keep riders comfortable in cool temperatures. Yet in minutes its quick-release windscreen and saddlebags can be removed creating a classically styled, high performance cruiser. The split seat, featuring a unique stitch and stud pattern, can likewise be trimmed down to create a tight and low solo look, giving the Indian Springfield a truly customizable personality.

The 2016 Indian Springfield starts at $27,299 and comes in Thunder Black. It comes with a two-year unlimited mileage factory warranty and, as with all new Indian Motorcycles, includes free membership in the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group™ for one year.
