Royal Enfield Re-Launches its Iconic 144 Year-Old Brand in North America

@royalenfield • MILWAUKEE, Aug. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Royal Enfield, the fastest growing motorcycle company in the world, today announced its first wholly owned subsidiary outside India, in North America.

This strategic announcement is in line with Royal Enfield's international focus on leading and expanding the global mid-sized motorcycle segment (250-750cc), with North America representing a priority market for the company.

Royal Enfield is the oldest motorcycle company in continuous production, with roots dating back to 1901 in Redditch, England. A division of publicly traded Eicher Motors Limited (EICHERMOT.NS), its current product line-up in North America includes the iconic Bullet 500cc, Classic 500cc and the Continental GT 535cc cafe racer ranging from $4,995 to $5,995. Royal Enfield has been exporting motorcycles to North America for 15 years through an independent distributor.

Led by an executive team and senior leadership with deep motorcycle category experience, newly-formed Royal Enfield North America will immediately take over operations, marketing, communications, sales, warranty, service, dealership development and finance for the company across the U.S. and Canada. North American Headquarters, along with a new flagship company-owned dealership, will be located in Milwaukee, WI.

"Royal Enfield has been growing at over 50% year-on-year for the last five years. With a proven business model, today we are one of the largest mid-size motorcycle manufacturers in the world. With our increased efficiencies and scale of manufacturing we are strategically positioned to make effective business inroads within international markets, including the United States," said Mr. Rudratej Singh, president, Royal Enfield.

"Motorcycles and the riding culture is robust in North America and it is certainly a growth market for us. A wholly owned subsidiary company in the region allows us to be closer to our customers and significantly enhance their product and ownership experience, with a wider footprint and robust after-sales service network. We are confident that with our current and future product line we will re-invigorate the mid-sized motorcycle segment in the US with motorcycles that are holistic in their approach and are great fun to ride, both in the cities and on back country roads," he added.

Mr. Siddhartha Lal, CEO, Royal Enfield said, "Our motorcycles are inspired by the classic bikes throughout motorcycling history, in form and in simplicity; and they capture the feeling of freedom, fun and responsiveness that riders were trying to achieve then, and brings it into the modern context. Royal Enfields are possibly the most engaging mid-size motorcycles out there. We use traditional craftsmanship and modern technology as a means to achieve the perfect balance between the rider, the machine and the terrain."

The company's regional office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the leadership team will be led by Rod Copes, President, Royal Enfield North America, responsible for managing its operation in the market including marketing, communications, sales, warranty, service, dealership development and finance. All manufacturing will continue to remain in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India where Royal Enfield has been manufacturing since 1955. Global headquarters will continue to reside in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.

"In a post performance era where American riders are looking for machines that are easy to own and maintain, Royal Enfield offers evocative and unintimidating modern classic motorcycles, with timeless appeal. Royal Enfield's first fully branded retail store in the United States will soon be launched in Milwaukee that will retail its entire product line-up of motorcycles and gear. Over the next 18 months we plan to launch several such stores in key metropolitan areas across the US. We are also focusing on building a strong independent dealer network that will maximize our brand awareness and sales," said Rod Copes, President Royal Enfield North America.

"While Royal Enfield continues to strengthen its presence in the market, our previous distributors, Classic Motor Works (CMW), located in Fairbault, MN will be transitioning out of distributing Royal Enfield motorcycles by the end of 2015," added Rod.

In 2014, Royal Enfield sold more than 300,000 motorcycles globally. Parent company, Eicher Motors Ltd., recorded its highest ever total revenue of $1.4 billion USD, with large contributions from the Royal Enfield business unit.

About Royal Enfield:

The oldest motorcycle company in continuous production, Royal Enfield made its first motorcycle in 1901. A division of Eicher Motors Limited, Royal Enfield has created the mid-size motorcycle segment in India with its unique and distinctive modern classic motorcycles. With its manufacturing base in Chennai, India, Royal Enfield is able to grow its production rapidly against a surge in demand for its motorcycles. With 50% growth every year for the last 5 years, Royal Enfield is fast becoming a very important player in the global mid-sized motorcycle market and is working towards re-inventing this space with motorcycles that are evocative and engaging and great fun to ride.

Royal Enfield's global product lineup includes the Bullet and Classic with 500cc displacements; and the recently introduced Continental GT 535cc cafe racer. Royal Enfield operates through 16 company-operated stores and more than 400 dealers in all major cities and towns in India, and exports to over 50 countries across the world including the USA, Japan, UK, several European and Latin American countries, as well as the Middle East and South Asia.

Royal Enfield also organizes and supports many motorcycling events and rides on a global scale.

Dainese Custom Works program returns to Mississauga's Riders Choice

The popular Dainese Made-To-Measure program is returning to Riders Choice on October 7-8, the company's only stop on its 10-stop North American tour. The Made-to-Measure program gives the public the opportunity to be measured up by tailors right from the Dainese factory in Italy, and have their product the same folks that outfit the likes of Valentino Rossi.

Customers can be fitted for a Dainese leather race suit, jacket or pants and choose amongst several styles, colours and graphic options. Prices vary depending on what product and level of customization you choose, from customized off-the-rack suits to full customization of colours, logos, graphics and fitting.

Interested riders should call Riders Choice at 905-896-7433 or email info@riderschoice.com. Fittings take approximately one hour per person.

From the Dainese Custom Works website:

"Dainese has made custom suits for World Champions like Kenny Roberts Sr., Giacomo Agostini, Eddie Lawson, John Kocinski, Kevin Schwantz, Scott Russell, Max Biaggi, Marco Simoncelli, Nicky Hayden, and of course nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi.

"Clearly, after working with racers such as these for over 40 years, we know how to make custom leather garments. Our Custom Works suits are comprised of many different pieces just like Valentino Rossi’s. The ‘custom’ part comes from years of experience and knowing how to interpret the 26 measurements (one being weight) taken by our tailors and then ‘stretching’ (morphing) each panel of a standard sized garment into a panel that will allow the custom garment to fit together as a unit specifically tailored for each measured rider. All of this is done in our factory in Molvena, a small village in Northern Italy in an area that is known for fine leather and excellent seamstresses coming from generations of leatherworkers. But the process begins with the client and taking the measurements that Dainese has determined to be the most critical. And only trained Dainese specialists, with years of experience, can take these measurements. Once the measurements are reviewed and approved in Molvena, the process of determining which standard suit to begin with and how best to morph that suit begins. And then the final patterns shapes are sent to the computerized leather cutting machines.

"The design work is done with the client during the event, and then finalized in Molvena, Italy via emails before being put into production."

BMW Shows Off 310 cc Single-Cylinder Stunt Concept Bike in Brazil‏

@BMWMotorrad • São Paulo. With the world premiere of the BMW Concept Stunt G 310 at South America’s largest motorcycle show, BMW Motorrad is presenting a completely new side: the uncompromising interpretation of an aggressive and agile stunt bike based on a single cylinder study.

Thanks to his experience as a four-time World and European stunt riding champion, Chris Pfeiffer contributed to the realisation of the BMW Concept Stunt 310.

“Stunt riding is a demanding and multi-faceted sport. Ideally you need a compact, agile bike which is also stable and robust at the same time. You have to achieve the ideal balance between aggressiveness and control,” explains Pfeiffer.

Compact proportions, highest-level agility.

The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 combines all these qualities and makes clear at first sight: the newly developed 1-cylinder engine allows for very compact proportions thanks to its innovative concept. The special feature is the cylinder which is inclined towards the rear and the cylinder head which is rotated by 180 degrees. This permits optimum placement of the engine in the motorcycle and a short wheelbase in spite of the long swinging arm thereby making the motorcycle very agile. The low-slung front and the raised tail section promise fast and nimble changes of direction as well as dynamic riding. By shifting the intake area towards the front while also moving the exhaust system towards the rear it was possible to place the rear silencer in an upright standing position underneath the seat between engine and spring strut. In this way the silencer is optimally protected and does not limit the stunt rider’s freedom of movement. Even though you may hardly see it, you will not overhear it. Once started, the sound of the BMW Concept Stunt G 310 is sure to attract attention.

Emotional surface design in typical BMW Motorrad style.

The emotional side view of the Concept Bike is characterised by the powerful three-dimensional design of its surfaces. The precise lines and the expressive interplay of the contours create a sense of movement and speed even when the bike is stationary. What is especially striking in this respect are the side wing contours of the fuel tank which significantly emphasise this effect. All lines seem to generate a sense of movement towards the front wheel and underline the playful ease of handling of the BMW Concept Stunt G 310. Simultaneously the bike’s surfaces create a compact and distinctive silhouette emphasising the favourable centering of masses around the engine block.

The slim front view of the BMW Concept Stunt G 310 also draws attention to its high level of agility. The expressively modelled surfaces of the fuel tank result in a broad shoulder section which is underscored further by the design of the front facia. Similar to its front, the raised, filigree tail promises playful cornering and handling. It shifts the visual centre of gravity to the front even further and in combination with the engine spoiler emphasises the front wheel even more.

Extensive stunt modifications.

The numerous modifications are typical for a stunt bike; in making them Chris Pfeiffer brought his many years of experience as a stunt professional to bear in cooperation with the BMW Motorrad Design Team. Their single aim is to provide the best possible handling properties for the stunt rider’s feats on the asphalt. The lockable throttle ensures constant propulsion even when the rider’s hand has to let go of the throttle grip. In addition a slightly altered gear ratio secures greater propulsive force to the rear wheels at low engine speeds while the intentionally oversized rear wheel brake ensures reliable deceleration in every situation. A second, even larger rear wheel brake allows the rider to brake the rear wheel using only his middle finger, in case his right foot is not on the footrest in certain stunts. The additional brake lever is specially placed on the left side of the handlebars and can even be operated at the same time as the clutch. So-called axle pegs on the front axle and in the seat area give the rider additional options for placing his feet which go way beyond the possibilities offered by normal foot rests. The distinctive red crash bars provide additional protection for the engine. A special highlight on the BMW Concept Stunt G 310 is the “stunt tail” which was specifically developed by BMW Motorrad and which has not been seen in this shape on a stunt bike. It is milled from solid aluminium and features an opening in the centre, which offers the stunt rider a hold for his foot. Together with the non-slip seat, the aluminium component also ensures a stable seating position when riding thanks to its shape.

Modern colour and material design.

The colour concept features the classic BMW motorsport colour white as the base colour as well as red and blue in combination with the national colours of the Brazilian flag in a modern interpretation. The spectacular neon green and yellow colour and material design is certain to attract attention. The bright neon colours extend along the entire body thereby emphasising the dynamic lines and surfaces of the bike. The core of the bike, the drivetrain, features darker colours and moves the visual centre of gravity even lower. Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design sums up: “The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 is a real eye-catcher. Everything on this concept seems to be shouting out to ride it and defy the laws of gravity.”

The Yamaha DT-07 'Dirt Track Concept' on stage at AIMExpo

Inside Motorcycles was on hand for the worldwide unveiling of Yamaha's new Dirt Track Concept bike, the DT-07, at the AIMExpo in Orlando, FL on Thursday, October 15. Powered by the liquid-cooled 689 cc parallel twin from the popular FZ-07 middleweight naked bike introduced in 2014, the wraps were literally pulled off the bike in front of a packed Media Hub at the 2015 AIMExpo.
STU-MCY16-60-CU-06.jpgThe DT-07, built by Yamaha USA's racing division, features a custom one-piece body in Yamaha's 60th anniversary livery, Ohlins rear shock and a plethora of aftermarket bits by top names like K&N and D.I.D. While the model is currently just a concept, the popularity of flat track racing in North America combined with Yamaha's successful heritage in the sport means that, in our opinion, the DT-07 could very well be a production flat track bike available to the public; considering the FZ-07's base price of $7,299 MSRP, could a race-ready Open-class twin sell well enough for Yamaha to do a limited production run of the slick-looking DT-07?

For 2016, Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., has upped the ante, giving sportbike riders a third R1 model from which to choose.

The 2016 YZF-R1S offers yet another level of perfomance specifically geared towards budget-conscious sportbike enthusiasts who do most of their riding on the street. Yamaha engineers replaced some of the R1’s higher-spec components like the titanium connecting rods and exhaust headers, magnesium oil pan and wheels, and softer-compound tires with lower-cost components. The result is a litre-class sport bike with a slightly higher curb weight that sacrifices virtually none of its real-world R1 performance-including the legendary “Crossplane Crankshaft Concept” engine; titanium muffler; six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU); electronic traction, slide, lift, and launch controls, and ABS--and delivers it all at a lower suggested retail price.

The 2016 R1S will be available in Matte Gray and Intensity White/Raven/Rapid Red, and will retail for $16,699, a full $2,300 (CAD) less than the base R1! Availability in Canadian dealerships is expected beginning in February.

The Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the first member of the class of 2015. Warren Thaxter will be honoured at the Tenth Annual Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Reunion, which takes place on November 7, 2015 at the Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel, 801 Dixon Road in Toronto, Ontario.

Very few men have had such a profound effect in growing the sport of off road motorcycling in Canada as Warren Thaxter. His influence runs deep touching almost every type of off road, trail and adventure riding currently happening in Ontario. Warren was constantly introducing ideas and concepts that were way ahead of their time and are only now being recognized as best practice.

His biggest contribution to the sport is as a builder. After 33 years in the automotive industry, Warren retired to become completely immersed in the motorcycle world. He envisioned a future of organized, paid trail rides in Ontario starting in 1987 with OCMC’s Algonquin 2-Day.

As the concept of organized trail riding caught on, Warren saw the need for a provincial organization to represent off road riders’ rights and along with several others, founded the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders (OFTR) in 1992. The OFTR Trail Ride Series was established and the OFTR continues to ensure off-road riders have access to some of the best riding areas in the world.

Warren was also was a founder of Offroad Ontario, a competition organization and he hosts a yearly cross country race in that series. He has been a regular columnist for Inside Motorcycles magazine since its inception. His writing has influenced countless Canadians who were either involved in the sport or riders who were considering it.

He has also served on the boards of the CMA, MCC, CMHOF and numerous clubs.

Tickets for the Tenth Annual Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Reunion are now available at here.
